Parents protest outside school:
The sleep fishing village of Los Nietos, located between La Manga and Los Alcazares, has hit headline news as several parents of children of the school protested after a teacher who had been off sick from work for several months was returned to her position. On the first day of her return the teacher was met with protests from several parents who had tried to stop the teacher from entering the school. The Guardia Civil had to be called to calm the situation. The Ministry of Education has stated that this teacher has been allowed back into her position as she is fully recovered. Despite several complaints from parents Inspectors from the Ministry of Education couldn't find sufficient evidence to transfer the teacher to another school; consequently, she has been reincorporated into her job as tutor for 5th grade students.
The President of the Parents Association, Amparo Alcaraz announced that she will be asking permission from the Regional Government to hold another protest in front of the school as the first protest that was held was done so illegally. The opinion of the Parents Association's President and a few other parents is not that of the majority of parents of children that are at the school. The majority of parents whose children are at the school are quite pleased to see that this teacher has returned and would prefer it if she was just allowed to get on and do her job.

Cartagena tries to save money on electricity photo street lights:
The Town Council of Cartagena has announced that they will be making various cuts in order to save on their electricity bill. The cuts in question pertain to the number of hours that street lights are lit throughout the municipality. The Council has announced that they plan to turn the lights on 15 to 20 minutes later than usual and turn them off 10 minutes before they would normally be turned off in the morning. The council has also announced that they will be changing the bulbs in some 40,000 streetlights throughout the municipality for low energy consumption bulbs in a bid to reduce the amount that the council is paying to Iberdrola.
Whilst the idea of turning the lights on slightly later in the evening has not been met with any protest the idea of turning them off 10 to 15 minutes earlier in the morning has. Many spokespersons for Residents Associations have complained that this would mean that many children would be walking to school in the dark if the lights were turned off by 7.30 am. This situation would only occur in the winter months when the sun rises later. So far with other cuts in the municipal buildings i.e. changing bulbs for low consumption bulbs and making sure that lights are not left on at night, has saved the council €360,000 throughout 2011. The Mayor would like to see this figure increase substantially which is why the amount of time the street lights are on will be reduced.

Work still going on at San Javier despite imminent closure:
A.E.N.A. has announced that it would not be able to stop the work at San Javier Airport despite the ongoing negotiations to transfer the activities to Corvera Airport. Closing San Javier Airport would result in all of the domestic flights from San Javier being transferred to Corvera leaving it just for military use. Even though the move to Corvera has been announced and the deal has been sealed, the work to improve the check-in and departures area in San Javier Airport is still ongoing and will not be finished until the end of February. According to a spokesperson from A.E.N.A., the contract to undertake these works had already been signed prior to any agreement to move to Corvera was made. Whilst this would be appear to be an extreme waste of money A.E.N.A have insisted that their hands are tied and that they must continue with the jobs due to contractual obligations.

Marina de Cope Development to go ahead:
The Marina de Cope Development which initially included plans to build 9,000 new homes and offer 20,000 hotel beds in a 21 million square metre area on the virgin coast located between Lorca and Aguilas will go ahead despite the protests from the Ecologists in Action Groups. The Ecologists in Action Groups have complained repeatedly since the original plans to build on this virgin coast were announced.
The case has now gone through the courts and whilst the ecologists have not completely won their case they have managed to reduce the amount of homes that will be built. Instead of a complex covering 21 million square metres the project has only been approved to cover 40,000 square metres on which no more than 5,000 homes can be built. This is welcome news to many people who have already invested and bought homes off-plan on the complex. It is now to be seen how the obligations of the promoters will now be met to those who have bought homes in areas that are no longer now included on the plans. It is expected that those who have purchased off-plan on the Marina de Cope Development will be given the choice to move to an area which is within the 40,000 square metres that will be built upon.
