Arrested at a Brothel in Fuente Alamo:
Police officers from Cartagena have arrested 3 people, one Spanish national and two foreigners. They have been charged with illegal immigration practices and infringing human rights. In the same police operation 12 women who were found to be working at the brothel, situated on the road from Cartagena to Alhama de Murcia in the municipality of Fuente Alamo were also arrested. None of the women had work permits or visas. The brothel, which did not have an opening licence, ‘licensia de apertura’, was under surveillance for several weeks. A Chrysler Voyager, which was used to ferry five or six women at a time to and from the brothel, is registered to Don. J.M.T., a Spanish national, who housed the women in his chalet in Tallante. He lived there with his partner, a Romanian woman, D.A.S. Both have previous police records associated with prostitution. Out of the people who were arrested there were two men (1 from Nigeria, 1 from Ecuador) who were acting as managers for the Club and 13 women (10 from Rumania, 2 from Nigeria and 1 from Bolivia) who acted as prostitutes in the Club. According to the police they gave statements in the presence of a lawyer, stating J.M.T., D.A.S. and J.L.E.M. forced them to work in the brothel and that their lives were threatened daily. All but three of the women are here in Spain illegally and are awaiting expulsion orders. The others who were arrested are awaiting trial.

Gusts Blew 34-Metre Palm Down:
The high winds experienced in the region on Tuesday blew down several trees, electricity cables, and streetlights throughout the region, however most of the wind damage was coastal. One of the casualties of the gales was a 34-metre, 200-year-old palm tree. It stood in the Plaza de la Merced in Cartagena. Nobody was hurt when the top half of the palm tree fell into the Plaza because police officers had cleared the area when it became apparent that the trunk could not stand up to the 103 kph winds.
