Protocol gets in the way of treatment:
An elderly woman was left lying in the street in front of the Rosell Hospital in Cartagena for half an hour suffering from a bleeding head injury after she fainted and fell to the ground. "She was left for half an hour in this state as no one would come out of the hospital to help her, a Red Cross ambulance from La Union had to come to attend to her and take her to the A & E at the Rosell "a waitress from Francesa, a cafeteria located in the Paseo Alfonso XIII, opposite the hospital, also commented that there was no explanation for the attitude of the auxiliaries, doctors and nurses at the Santa María del Rosell hospital who flatly refused to come out of the hospital and attend to the pensioner despite requests from her daughter. The elderly woman was literally right in front of the hospital by the two maroon coloured news-stands when she became dizzy, fell to the ground, hit her head and passed out. The daughter's first reaction was to run across the car park into the hospital and ask for assistance. She was informed that protocol prohibited hospital employees from leaving the building and she would have to call an ambulance. The daughter did as she was asked and called the 112 services and also the Guardia Civil, as she was irate that no one would come and help her mother. As there were no ambulances available when the daughter called, the request was transferred to the Red Cross in La Union who sent an ambulance. This arrived 30 minutes later. The hospital has recognized that there was a delay in treating the injured woman but reiterated that protocol prevented any of its employees from leaving the building to attend to people. An employee at one of the kiosks, who preferred to remain anonymous, confirmed that the woman waited over half an hour and was not attended by any employee of the hospital.
Hospital Santa María de Rosell admitted through a spokesman that the ambulance took half an hour to arrive. He explained that the woman's daughter didn't report the incident in the correct way. There was no point informing the auxiliaries or hospital staff because that's what the ambulance service is there for. The spokesperson from the hospital added that the hospital's protocol also prevents doctors and nurses leaving the hospital, because it has to be the ambulance personnel who move the wounded. The pensioner's daughter has decided to place a formal complaint regarding the incident.

Tax man embargoes "Greens" bank accounts:
The Tax Office has embargoed eight individual accounts of members of the Ecologists in Action Murcia group who have not paid the fines imposed upon them by the board of the Port Authority of Cartagena, as a result of a protest staged last summer against the construction of a new container dock at El Gorguel. Ruben Vives, President of Ecologists in Action Murcia and one of the eight who have had their accounts embargoed, explained that the penalty amounted to €8,000, €1,000 for each of the members who protested, but the amount that has been taken from their accounts is €1200, the original fine of €1000 plus a €200 late fee. Vives stated that one of the protesters had insufficient funds in his account when the Tax Office decided to dip into it, so it has withheld the balance due from the refund on his annual tax return. Vives added, "We will be appealing for the full return of our money plus any interest and further fees we incur." The fines were imposed because the environmentalists put a padlock on the main gateway to the Port Authority's headquarters in the Plaza of Heroes of Cavite in Cartagena. Vives went on to say, "Fines were imposed on 8 activists when in reality only 4 activists actually participated in this particular protest." The secretary of Ecologists in Action Murcia described the embargo as "despicable" and accused the president of the Port of being "a bully". He also announced that they have appealed to the courts to withdraw the fine.

Mayor opens new road:
The Minister of Public Works and Planning, José Ballesta, together with the Mayor of Fuente Alamo, María Antonia Conesa, officially opened the RM-E17 highway, which connects the hamlet of Tallante with the Totana-Mazarrón motorway (RM-3), the road has cost €368,880 and has improved the safety of the crossings in Fuente Alamo.
The work on this road, which crosses the municipalities of Cartagena, Fuente Alamo and Mazarrón, has been carried out, as it passes through the hamlet of La Pinilla and will benefit more than 800,000 drivers a year, according to José Ballesta. José Ballesta pointed out that the improvements have included the extension of the platform, with the addition of hard shoulders of a metre wide and new tarmac, "two simple measures that increase exponentially the safety while driving. "
New drains and gutters have been installed that will help take the excess water from the road after or during heavy downpours that can cause aquaplaning and car accidents. The work has been completed in accordance with the 4 month estimation and just in time to benefit drivers returning from their summer beach holidays.
José Ballesta added, "The Ministry of Public Works and Land Management also completed the work a few weeks ago replacing the cattle route around Fuente Alamo, which involved a total investment of €1,197,109. This cattle track, which is five metres wide, is designed to be used by livestock, for farm machinery transit and walkers and is part of the additional work for the future airport."

Campoverde's MIQP Concert Encore!:
Another concert has been planned for the church at El Pinar de Campoverde in the "Music in Quiet Places" series, following the success of three previous concerts held there. Wednesday September 8th is the date and 8pm the time. Solos will be performed by Jennifer Morton, Patricia Flint, Jo van Bentham and Wim van Hugten. Choral items will be provided by the group Chorale to include Ave Maria (Schubert), When I fall in Love, and - amazingly - the Hallelujah Chorus from Handel's Messiah. Not the full work, but a shortened version specially arranged for the choir.
This concert will also be a little different from those before. Between the choral pieces Christine and Roger Eames will be playing some piano and bass duets from their repertoire of famous compositions by Spanish and Latin American composers. Entry is free, with a retiring collection to support the work of the church.
